A food contact project usually reaches the silicone buyer as a short message: a drawing, a target hardness, and one line saying the part has to be food safe. Two or three suppliers reply with a quotation and a certificate attached. The certificates are not always about the grade being quoted, and that is where most of the risk in this category sits.

Platinum cured silicone became the default for food contact moulds because the addition reaction leaves no peroxide residues, and the cured rubber carries little smell or taste. That does not make every platinum grade a food grade. The difference is documentation, and it is decided per grade rather than per company.

What Food Grade Has to Mean

A document that names the grade. A company level certificate shows that a supplier holds approvals. It does not show that the drum in front of you is covered. Ask for the declaration or test report that carries the grade code.

The right chemistry. Peroxide cured silicone is still sold for industrial moulds, and it is not the material for direct food contact. Confirm that the grade is addition cure, not condensation or peroxide cure.

A cure speed that fits the line. Some grades set at room temperature in a few hours, others need heat. The grade that suits a small workshop may be wrong for a line running a fixed cycle.

Traceability to the run. If one batch smells different or sets slower, the buyer needs to link it to a production run. Retention and batch records are what make that possible.

Four Checks to Run Before You Order

Compare the grade on the quote with the grade on the document. This is the most common gap in the category, and it stays invisible unless the two codes are read side by side.

Decide between 1:1 and 10:1. Thin food moulds leave little room for weighing error, and a 1:1 system is more forgiving on a manual line. A 10:1 system suits a workshop that already controls dispensing.

Ask what the trial path looks like. Minimum order quantity, sampling lead time and whether pre-production sampling is offered. Export buyers commonly begin from a trial quantity of 10kg, which is enough for a full mould.

Ask who answers technical questions. A trader forwards the question. A factory answers it.

Matching the Grade to the Food Application

Chocolate, candy and fondant. Soft grades release from thin walls and small undercuts, and they tolerate the gentle handling these parts need.

Baking mats and cake decoration. The grade has to hold shape at oven temperatures, so check the service temperature as well as the food declaration.

Ice cube trays and cold work. Flexibility at low temperature matters more than heat resistance; a soft grade lifts the cubes without cracking the tray.

Repeated production. Where the mould runs daily, tear strength decides the replacement cycle, and batch consistency decides whether the cycle stays predictable.

Where Food Contact Projects Fail

Three failures repeat. The first is a document issued for a sibling grade. The second is cure inhibition: certain master materials, and sulphur containing modelling clays in particular, stop a platinum system from setting, and the workshop blames the silicone. The third is drift between batches, which shows up as a change in release rather than as a visible defect.

Send the supplier a specification rather than a request: part type, hardness, cure condition and the food contact requirement. Ask for the grade declaration with the grade code on it, then run a trial batch from 10kg against a real master. Record release, surface finish and set time on the first three casts, and keep those notes for the second order.
